Opposition argument on Measure A. No on Measure A.
Riverside County is not growing as a result of some natural law, but rather as a result of bad policies of the County Board of Supervisors and their developer friends. Past experience has shown that road building leads to homebuilding. Homebuilding occurs faster than the roads can accommodate new drivers and traffic worsens rather than improves.
Passage of Measure A will be a credit card to the supervisors for more sprawl. This will lead to increased industrial development and diesel truck traffic with increased air pollution.
Measure A means more commuters, bigger traffic jams, more pollution and more development.
The results of Measure A passage in 1988 have been more deteriorated roads and a huge backlog for needed road repairs. In addition the 91 freeway has become virtually unusable and air pollution in large parts of the county are causing disease in our children.
There is nothing in Measure A that guarantees that the multi-species habitat plan will be adopted. Passage of Measure A will actually decrease the incentive for the county to pass and establish an effective habitat program.
When the Sierra Club agreed to drop the lawsuit against the county’s general plan, the Board of Supervisors no longer had an incentive to cease piecemeal approval of special projects.
When requested to halt approvals during development of the new general plan, the Board of Supervisors refused to and continues to do business as usual. The best predictor of the future is past actions, not the empty promises of Measure A.
We urge the Sierra Club to Oppose Measure A.
