Here are linux programs/features I don't like. Experience tells
me, your mileage will vary. It's possible I didn't give them a chance, but
you are forewarned.
- Gnome. I'm sorry, I want to like the Gnome desktop
-- this is a true Open Source project, but it just isn't as mature as the
one from KDE.
- Ximian. Here was a real disappointment. I was trying
to find a really good PIM and the write-ups on Evolution sounded like it
was a winner. In addition, Ximian has its version of Gnome,
and Red Carpet, which promises to keep your programs updated
Unfortunately, I installed it and hated it. Gnome just doesn't have
the tools that KDE has. The Evolution PIM didn't satisfy me and wasn't particularly
better than the ones I already had from StarOffice and KDE.
I was hoping the Red Carpet system would be a useful tool. Ximian
correctly points out that linux is difficult to manage without a centralized
install/uninstall manager. Unfortunately, Red Carpet suffers from
what I dislike so much about programs from that company in Redmond -- you
can't configure it and you can't tell what it is doing. To it's credit,
the programs it installed were logged into the Mandrake Install/Uninstaller.
I was really relieved by this, since Ximian had installed a bunch
of programs I did not want and I had no other idea how to get rid of them.
