weird repositories
By basd on Dec 27, 2009 | In opensuse
OpenSuse frequently changes the KDE repositories, which is a problem when suddenly YAST can't find them. So, there was a special interim repository for 4.3. Now, the "stable" repository claims to be 4.3.4 -- but isn't, if you use that repository you get 4.1, which is a disappointing roll-back. Your other option is to use the Factory repositories, which gives you 4.4 (beta), which may be a tad cutting edge for regular use.
...
All of this led to naturally another screw-up on my part. So, I loaded 4.3 via OpenBuildService, which turned out to be the Factory respository. Then I discovered the "4.3.4 Stable" repository and attempted to rollback, but ended up with 4.3.1 and a totally crashed plasma. So, I rolled forward again to 4.3.85 (4.4 beta) -- now plasma works again, but a few things are not working, such as sysinfo -- which I think is the result of some package corruption I can't cure. The reason I think that, is that it works fine on my other computers that did not suffer my effort at roll-back.
And all of this is on the computer I use as my music server, which I had to rollback fromOpSu 11.2 because it was unstable on the Toshiba A15. (And, btw, I am getting searches landing on my website for things like "OpenSuse 11.2 Toshiba unstable" -- so it looks as though I am not alone with this particular problem and possibly it is a Toshiba-related issue. That is, I have seen any other searches such as "OpenSuse 11.2 unstable" which would be a more generic search.)
