this is special

Well, I re-re-installed the new kernel, even though Yast specified the new kernel to still be the same one from 2/27/09 -- and this time, wouldn't you know it, it works.
...
And, plasma's not crashing now.
There may be some relationship to another change I made (or not), but I'll mention it here anyway. There was a library that caused a dependency conflict with digikam. Previously, I elected to not install the updated library. Today I elected to uninstall the affected digikam programs.
Now, I did not receive a dependency error for the kernel when I DIDN'T install this library, so I assume it is not to blame. My assumption is that sometime since I first installed the new kernel and re-installed the new kernel, OpSu quietly fixed the rpm(s) without re-numbering the release. A renumbered release would have triggered a YAST update, and what I did was simply re-re-install the one that I had already installed.
So, that's my story if anyone wants to know.
In the meantime, I was having plasma AND KWin effects crashes while running the trace "realtime" kernel. Also, Cairo-dock crashes. So, the 2.6.27.19-3.2 update has been super annoying. But, as of this moment it now boots and seemingly works okay.
I also noticed that I did not have any more hits from people looking into 2.6.27.19-3.2 crashes, so the problem must have been resolved for those updating since the 28th or so.
And that's all I know for now.
Thank you for visiting and have a pleasant tomorrow.
