stuff that doesn't work.

1.? Suspend is now working nicely on my Acer netbook.? (OpSu 11.2/KDE 4.4.4).? HOWEVER, due to the change in the bluetooth/blackberry connection
...
mentioned in prior post, I cannot reconnect the bluetooth/blackberry connection upon return from suspend.Since the blackberry now insists on confirming a self-generated passcode on both the blackberry and the computer, we need a confirmation popup on the computer.? This works via the bluetooth manager when the computer is re-booted, but once the connection has been made and the computer suspended, the popup is not available on the computer.? So, the blackberry connects and then immediately disconnects.
2.? Firefox 3.6.6 on OpSu 11.2 with LXDE desktop often remains in memory upon close and then revs up to about 40% cpu doing who-knows-what.?? Not certain whether this occurs also when I run the KDE 4.4.4 desktop.
3. Although KDE 4.4.4 seemingly is now working well on my Acer netbook, on my Sony laptop it still goes into 80-100% cpu activity mode when it goes into "sleep" after the screensaver has been running.? As mentioned before, this same problem now seems to have been solved on the Acer.? I have not, however, been running the Acer much with the KDE 4.4.4 desktop due to needing my bluetooth/blackberry connection frequently -- and not having had time to set it up, or re-set-it-up in KDE 4.4.4 (lost all my panel icons in the upgrade).? So, when I attempted to use it I couldn't establish my needed connection and have thus reverted to using LXDE.
4. I am VERY happy that linux programmers have enabled the bluetooth system.? I use it ALOT to tether my blackberry.? However, it is still a bit immature and buggy compared to normal wireless usage.? Plus, cheap netbooks do not come with a bluetooth adapter.? The ones I have been buying are about $40 -- and as mentioned elsewhere, if I move them from computer to computer (or even boot the same computer to Windows instead of Linux), then I have to delete the connection from the blackberry an re-establish a whole new connection.? Plus, with the new, even more annoying insistance of the blackberry to verify a new self-generated passcode on every connect, the process of connecting has become iffy.
In addition, with my family now using ipod touches, it occurred to me that it would be very beneficial to have the larger screen real estate and web usefulness of that package, but I also have need for blackberry services since I am on an enterprise server. Lastly, contrary to all the naysayers who questioned the point of the ipad, I am very covetous of this device (or preferrably, a similar device running linux, as I am very unfond of the Apple business model.)? My wife also wants one, and she does not care an iota about computer business models.? As mentioned before, I couldn't get her to communicate via email -- despite a home festooned with computers -- until she got the itouch.? Which, once again, is a testament to the Apple feel for ergonomics, despite MY view of their business model.
All of this is all well and good when near a wireless connection, but there is no way we can afford a data plan for each and every wireless device.?? I came very close to scrapping my blackberry in favor of the verizon -- mifi.? This would also solve my problem at court where there are numerous signs that cell phone use is prohibited.? (Which signs are honored by attorneys about as often as people drive the speed limit on the freeway.? At least so far as text/email is concerned.? Is this really "cellphone" use or something else?)? But in any event, a wireless card will not accidentally interrupt the proceedings with an embarrassing ring tone.? And, while I usually remember to turn of the alerts, I discovered a new risk while walking down the street the other day -- for no apparent reason, my blackberry media player started playing a podcast I had been listening to previously.? Something new to worry about.
But, I didn't want to give up my blackberry; and in addition I have a very favorable legacy data plan.? This led me to try a different approach to my web search, whereupon I found what may be a good solution.? (Quite frankly, I considering whether there was some way I could stuff a linksys router into my briefcase, but that seemed highly cumbersome.? In addition, if Verizon can minaturize a router, someone else must do so, no?)? In any event, I am awaiting? a new device that allegedly will solve all my problems inexpensively by providing me with portable wifi via my blackberry.? Hope it works.
- More argghhhs.
- frozen screen of death.? Allegedly linux never dies because it isolates processes.? hahahahaha!? There is some OpSu 11.2 condition, apparently related to dead internet connection, that results in a frozen screen of whatever you were doing, an active cursor and no keyboard input at all.? The only rescue I have come up with is a hard power down.? NOT GOOD!
- OpSu 11.2/KDE 4.4.4.? Conky reports 40% cpu usage, but sys monitor only shows around 10% total (yes, it is allegedly showing "all processes" not just user processes.)? What?
- ATT UVERSE bork.? I have really liked ATT UVERSE since it became available in my neighborhood.? Excellent uptime, excellent tech service.? But, that was then, this is now.? Lots of interruptions and down time.? Calls to tech support claim it is a problem with my equipment (I doubt it unless the UVERSE router is dying.)? Other neighbors reporting the same problem as well -- but tech support is totally oblivious to any issues, even though ATT/UVERSE trucks can be seen at service points in the neighborhood.? Wife very angry, tv keeps going off.? I don't like to have tech support out, because when they look at my stack of wires it's always "my equipment."? So, I have to unplug everything and then surprise ... still doesn't work, it's AT&T.? Recently went through same deal at my inlaws on TimeWarner Cable.? Oh, wait!? I guess the decoder box is borked!
- OpSu 11.2/KDE 4.4.4 -- touchpad control not working right, needs different driver.? (Good news, maybe -- seems to be working correctly on the Gateway now running OpSU 11.3/KDE 4.4.4 ...? I particularly like the auto-disable when typing because otherwise my cursor is flying all over the place, really annoying.? My linux installs have always had finicky touch pad control, when compared with the native MS products.
- It's looking like I will soon be upgrading OpSu 11.2 to OpSu 11.3.? I always hate this step, especially as upgrades are never as functional as clean installs and I don't want to do a clean install because of all the customization I have to re-do.? Which is why, actually, the Gateway bork worked out okay -- I had a clean install to work with, unintended or not.
