This version of david1 is working pretty well.? If you haven't been playing along, it's my Live USB version of OpSU 12.1/LXDE desktop.
...
I solved the problem where I had it booting into x windows the first time -- earlier when I just used the "lxde pattern" it didn't actually give me a working X system.? So, then I used the X pattern and added a bunch of other X windows packages.? Apparently I did not need the X windows pattern, removing it got a first boot directly via the lxdm displaymanager.? I also realized when I decided to actually install this version onto a computer that there was apparently no live installer, so I added that.David1 is built on the standard OpenSUSE 12.1 repositories, plus Tumbleweed and Tumbleweed Packman, so although it is not loaded with All the Programs You Will Need like Goliath1, you have access to adding whatever you need via Yast.? The limiting factor is the speed of your internet connection and the size of your flash drive.? (Build is around 1.5 gb, I'm using a 4 gb flash drive.)
So, I have now rescuscitated the Gateway LT3103u from the dead once again.??? Because, although the video just plain doesn't work in KDE (even with effects off) -- as noted here in prior posts -- it seemingly works just fine in LXDE.? I assume this has something to do with the difference between Kwin and OpenBox as the windows manager.
The computer probably also has a dying hard drive because what prompted the last meltdown was an "update" while I attempted to rescue programs that had seemingly gone missing.??? Don't know how long it will hold out this time ... and it's a bit problematic to use a computer that may not be reliable.
But, hey!? Now that I have LXDE live on the flash drive, worst case scenario would be to boot up from that.
I do regret not adding ntfs to the build.? It's easy enough to add to the flash drive once it's up and running, but it's almost certain that if you are booting from a flash drive, you will be inclined to go poking around on the windows drive, right?? Usually because you are trying to solve a fatal crash or root out a bunch of wild viruses and trojans ...
I hope interested LXDE users can track down this Suse Studio appliance, because I think I've filled a niche user-space!? It will be interesting to see if anyone other than me actually thinks it's useful.
