mucked-up monday
By basd on Mar 2, 2009 | In kde4, linux, opensuse, gnome
Every time I declare linux exceptionally cool and ready for prime time, some new and distressing disaster occurs.
...
I'm still running on the "trace" kernel, as OpenSUSE has yet to notice the defective new default kernel and repair it. Or, if they have done so, nothing in YAST is letting me know.
It's impossible to say where the disasteration is coming from, but there have been a few updates over the weekend that are not the kernel. The net result is as follows:
*Plasma is fatally crashing, which means probably that I have to rebuild the plasma desktop again because something has changed in a way that one of the widgets I am using crashes plasma. Being Monday, I would like to do some work and do not have time to play "Plasma."
My Gnome login is providing only 1 1/2 gnome panels, which is to say, I am missing a lot of my icons, though the system will run. If I run "plasome" I hae the weird reality of one (of two) plasma panels coming and going sporadically for no apparent reason -- but for the most part, not functioning. However, KWIN is running (without 3d effects) since I can pop up krunner.
This is just to weird and unstable. I checked for updates, but there was nothing of any particular value that would fix anything. So, all of my linux is annoyingly borked and I don't know when it will unbork, if ever. I can sort of do work, but this is ridiculously annoying.
In addition, my chair broke, so I have to stand up to work at my desk. (Which is a stand-up desk in the first place, so requires a tall chair if I wish not to stand while typing.
Off to the kitchen counter, I guess.
Thank you for visiting and have a pleasant tomorrow.
