eyeOS and OpenGOO
By basd on May 13, 2009 | In cloud computing
There seems to be a lot shaking in open source cloud computer land. But, I still haven't found my dream package ...
...
I have a lot of my personal work (contacts, calendaring, billing and the like) on PhProjekt. I've been able to modify the code to meet my needs. But, it's too cumbersome for most people, so I haven't been able to get family members and acquaintances to use it.
It seems to me that is the drawback of groupware solutions. How do you get others to actually use it (voluntarily)? And, how do you reduce the complexity to a level that the benefits substantially outweigh the learning curve and time factor of using it?
So... eyeOS has the benefit of a very clean interface that is similar to what people already use on their own computer desktop. For handing off some files or having a shared calendar, it's pretty useful. But, the calendar is not a true "groupware" calendar. And, organizing documents into folders is cumbersome because drag and drop only works to a limited extent.
OpenGOO is a more full-featured groupware solution, but it has more complexity and therefore more learning curve. And, there is an integration of OpenGOO with eyeOS at the eyeOS application website.
Unfortunately, I haven't found a full-featured word processor. The ones I find are html based, which is fine unless we want to produce actual business documents.
The whole situation reminds me of linux 10 years ago. So, 10 years out things will be looking pretty good I guess.
In the meantime, I developing beta-test fatigue. Also, work ends up pretty fractured if we have a little bit in this system, a little bit in another system ... Transitioning is always problematic (and I have a broken data trail to prove it.)
Thank you for visiting and have a pleasant tomorrow.
