The new 1.4 of virtualbox, along with the new 2.6.27.19-3.2 linux kernel (new to OpenSUSE that is) have inflicted some printing issues on me. But, there is good news on the pdf front.
...
For some reason, my virtualbox install is printing very slowly to my MFC9840 and not at all to my MFC8840. No idea what has changed, since they were both working fine before the upgrades.
Okular keeps improving, but it takes some testing to figure out "what works." I frequently utilize government supplied pdf forms that need to be filled out. Acrobat reader will only allow entry of the necessary data, but not saving of it.
Okular now has improved form handling capability. For the most part I am able to enter forms data. The result is not always identical to Acrobat -- for instance, on one document I got dollar signs instead of check marks. But, the forms data will save, although it's not clear specifically how to save it. I initially though I had to "save as" a new document -- and that the forms data would then appear only in the ORIGINAL document.
But, I noticed today that the forms data saved when I simply exited Okular without saving anything at all.
However, the forms data will only be read by Okular, not by other pdf readers. So, if one has to submit the finished pdf files in pdf form, this is not useful.
At one point, I had spent a great deal of time trying to flatten forms so that I could fill them out with PDFEdit. At that time, most pdf programs would not flatten correctly.
But it appears that Okular now WILL flatten the file and print the forms data. In any event, I printed my form to PDF -- and the result was a pdf file readable by Adobe Reader that was correctly filled in.
PROGRESS!
(BTW, KPDF still refuses to print, stating there is an "empty command line.")
