email conundrum update

Turns out a problem I was having with KMail related (apparently) to changes in the ports/login to my IMAP account. It was logging in and retrieving email, but doing so very poorly and erratically. I read the FAQ, made a change and now it works fine.
As to Thunderbird, it's working fine, too. I've marked the folders that need checking in Properties, so now I see the incoming email even if it is sorted to a folder or subfolder. I think.
But, I still don't have a filtering strategy. I want things to hit the inbox so I will be notified on my blackberry, but I don't want to manually sort it when I get to the computer. Then there is the handling of spam. I want to trigger the spam filter manually so I can look at what is there before it all heads to the Junk file. But, filters trigger automatically on the inbox, as far as I can tell. Somehow I have failed to satisfactorily work out the details.
Conundrums, conundrums.
