a few opensuse/arch/kde update observations

I'm still not certain whether my experiment with Arch linux, as a "rolling distro" (and therefore always current without having to reinstall) is a success. There were recently a bunch of notes indicating required script changes. I could not find any of the changes to be made, so it wasn't clear to me if I simply wasn't running the affected software or if I'm just stupid.
...
In any event, the updates did not crash the computer or anything. I'm happy to report that the idle temp. on the test computer has gone down by about 15 degrees. Wow! It's idling at about 109 deg. F. Important to mention, though, this is a very stripped down desktop that runs ICEWm (although all of KDE 3.5 and 4.0 are loaded and all the programs can run). I had a very neat desktop running Google Gadgets, but something has happened as the result of updates. Google Gadgets reports it cannot find java runtime. I have been unable to fix this problem. Java run time is available. (Come to think of it, not certain if it is complaining about java or javascript). But, can't find it. Used to find it, now can't find it. Also, I have no idea whether this is the result of one of the script changes that was supposed to be made manually (mentioned above). And also, although this problem is reported on the web with respect to earlier versions of Google Gadgets, no recent reports that I can find.
OTOH, my other dinosaur computer, the one that runs my music collection, is now idling at around 130-135 deg. F. What happened here? (It previously idled consistently at about 124 deg F.) Not so good and we're on the way to burning out the fan that replaced the original equipment fan. I think I'm running KDE 4.3 beta on here and maybe the problem lies somewhere in the beta.
