Vista SP2 all updated. Finally.
...
No, the automatic update system did not start working. Au contraire. I had to tediously search for each separate update by its kb no. to find the official MS download, then download it and open it in the windows standalone installer.
Most of the updates required a reboot. As I say, tedious.
You would think microsoft engineers could secretly put a linux install on their home machines or something so they could get up-to-date as to how a cutting edge operating system works. I can update the entire OpenSUSE install in the time it takes to run a single Windows security update. And, keep using the computer while doing so. Most of the time, no re-boot, unless the kernel has been updated. Linux can resize the partition -- the Microsoft resizer? Not so much. The list is endless.
PS -- Gateway is back to running "zippy" though. Deleted the page file (I had shut it off, but then realized I hadn't actually deleted it). Defragmented everything with Defraggle. Switched the setup to "best performance". (Interestingly, this shut off Aero in my admin account, but not in my normal user account ...)
