enough days of being happy that everything works

now back to our regularly scheduled whining. Imagine my surprise when I fired up the laptop to tether to my android -- and it didn't work.  So, I looked around the room at all the people happily browsing the net on their ipads.  Yes, they are spending… more »

fstab problem resolved

A lot of my .desktop launcher files are on my external drive.  They wouldn't launch.  I had previously mounted the partition "defaults, user".  Research indicated the partition needed to be "exec" -- which should be a default?  I changed fstab to "defaul… more »

but i wanted to say ...

before my self-inflicted meltdown of yesterday (which has ironically resulted in a reinstall and a better running system because of the legacy clean-out): Hey!  My computers are running great!!!  I document lots of issues and irritants here, but right… more »

well, it wasn't the end of the world (aka, i wish i wouldn't do that)

The good news is I have a clearn install of OpenSUSE 11.4. So, see, there is this new "systemd" to replace systemVinit.  And the Tumbleweed repositories explicitly told me not to install it. But did I listen?  Of course not.  Well, sort of.  Tumbleweed… more »

desktop dance (kde4.7 revisited)

So, my lxde desktop has become increasingly annoying. The launcher widget rarelywor after first start-up.  The panels disappear when rotating desktops.  Getting wicd or nm-applet running is annoying.  The tapping on the touchpad must be restarted. I co… more »

breathtaking incompetence

The U.S. Empire is doomed.  Who designs a system where 6 million people can lose their power because of this: "The outage occurred after an electrical worker removed a piece of monitoring equipment at a power substation in southwest Arizona, official… more »

it's not sunday, but I revisit Seamonkey

I mean, the biggest technology problem I face in my day-to-day work now is email management.  Yikes! I guess programmers are not facing my same dilemmas or are satisfied with Off the Shelf solutions. I access email from multiple devices and locations.… more »
