thunderbird/OpSu 11.3 x64 (un)fail

Thunderbird and OpenSuse developers don't seem to be able to get their act together, but I figured out how to get Thunderbird 3.1.4 running. In an earlier report, I indicated I remain puzzled as to how it is better to use OpSu build rather than the downlo… more »

xen fail

Having shifted computers around -- basically to get my noisy, broken fan 8 year old computers out of the living room -- I now have spare (but old) computers.  So, I tried XEN hypervisor because it seems like a really good idea, and then I can turn all my… more »

one dup may not be enough.

I previously reported that I upgraded OpenSUSE from 11.2 to 11.3 merely by changing the repositories and running "zypper dup."  This seemed to work sufficiently well that I did the same thing on a second computer. I did, however, gloss over some minor… more »

scary times 2

So, now I read Mandriva is forking as the result of a shake up and sell-off at it's parent corp.  Well, this is how Linux has always been.  I used Mandrake but ran into some problems, which is why I started using SuSE, and so I've never used Mandriva.  B… more »

ipod rabbit hole

I loaded some language mp3s into my ipod via gtkpod for listening to on my mega-commute.  Then I re-sync'd itunes and they all got deleted of course.  So I put them back, but this time the iPod was not mounting with user privileges so I had to manually r… more »

NFS stall in OpenSuse 11.3

If running the NFS client when not on the relevant network, the "timeout" for NFS to give up is inordinately long in OpenSuse 11.3 .  This occurs during the boot process and it is long enough to think that the computer has hung up and will not boot.  But… more »

or I could have finished watching The 3rd Man ...

So, having gotten my Virtualbox WindowsXP running just fine, I was testing Netflix performance on my zd7000.  Well, it wasn't quite what I was hoping for, as the video wasn't quite fast enough.  I wasn't certain whether this is the zd7000 (which is fairl… more »

scary times are here again.

Former Novell employee Joe Brockmeier reports on Planet SUSE that rumor says Novell is up for sale and the Linux portion will be split off to a "strategic buyer." I remember a few years back when Novell purchased SUSE.  It ultimately worked out for the… more »

abysmal is relative ...

I read a great post on ... hmmm, lot of help I am, can't remember.  Probably Planet KDE.  The author traced all the hassles (and expense) involved in installing a brand-spanking new version Windows 7.  I nearly quoted the whole thing here, it's that good… more »

OpSu 11.2 Thunderbird 3.1 fixed (sort of)

Well, it's going too far to say the OpSu build is fixed.  Mentioned before, I rolled back to 3.0.  I tried 3.1 from the Mozilla repository again -- still crashes. But, I've always been puzzled why distros maintain their own Mozilla respoitories anyway.  T… more »

the abysmal state of everything

You would think the linux world would have really good music players.  Meaning, exactly how I want it without writing the program myself.  After all, every college student has a huge music collection.  But nooo.... In fact the zen of things just workin… more »

too many arghhhs

It occurs to me with the time I have spent at my night job of personal IT manager to me I could have written everything I have ever used the computer for with a chisel on stone tablets in triplicate. Perfection is just too elusive.  Right now I am inst… more »

dropbox oops

So, one of the issues in synchronizing my lxde panels is having the right icons.  Not all of the computers have the same set of icons.  I decided to solve this problem by actually keeping a folder of icons in the dropbox collection so that every computer… more »

yast repositories opensuse

OpenSuse keeps moving repositories, even repositories that are in their automatic add "community" repositories in Yast.  It's a bit of a fail.  On top of that, I noticed that the rest of my repositories were not refreshing when one repository failed beca… more »

the value of xkill

KDE3 used to have a hotkey to pop up a little skull and crossbones cursor, which -- if you clicked on a stalled or runaway application (well, any application), would kill it.  Very useful -- especially when there was a much bigger problem with runaway ap… more »

a tiny percent of 1.67%

I read somewhere that linux users make up 1.67% of computer users.  Whoa!  IzWeAwesum? And then again, those of us who seem to leave a trail of (old but running) computers at multiple locations that we want to "synchronize" are probably, what? 1.67% of t… more »

painful progress

My Toshiba A15 laptop was still languishing with OpSu 11.1 because when I tried 11.2 nothing worked.  But, it was falling behind the times and I wanted it to have some minimum functionality on the desktop.  For whatever reason, among other things, google… more »

little things that drive me nuts

For some reason in LXDE, the xfce power management keeps telling me I am running on battery power.  OK already.  I know.  Now go away. (But no...) In my OpSu 11.3 install, the screen insists on locking when I close the lid, despite having set every set… more »

jolicloud+lxde+compiz+cairo-dock+conky+google gadgets

Working pretty good now.Well, some issues.  1st was, I didn't install to the same home directory I normally use.  I had hard coded the directory location into some of my setup files, so making the hand-off of configuration files work has some issues, but… more »

limits of the closed source model ...

So a moment ago I blogged that maybe I would see if I could run lxde panels on my Jolicloud desktop. So I did and it worked. :( This was cause for some reflection.  I haven't made any effort at joining a collaborative effort because I don't think I w… more »

fix thunderbird ... please!

I rolled back my Thunderbird install (OpSu 11.2/Thunderbird) to 3.0.6 instead of 3.1.  3.1 simply crashes.  So, like, could you fix this?  I sent in my crash reports ...It's easy to rollback versions in Yast, which I will mention.  One of the tabs in the… more »

some stuff unborks and other stuff borks and ... sheesh!

Random stuff is happening on my computer and it is not pretty. I've been using Thunderbird email on Linux AND Windows since forever.  Today, no warning, it quit working altogether on my OpSu 11.2 machine.  If I click on an email to read it, Thunderbird c… more »
