google builds the Matrix

Google keeps doing things Right, which is rather inconvenient.  And, maybe not so good for FOSS. And then I realized they are building the Matrix.  A cold shiver when up my spine. It all started with my contact database.  Or, we should say, "datab… more »

miscellany

I started thinking maybe I should buy a new computer, one that actually can do stuff.  So, I went and browsed the Best Buy website. Oh, I found lots of better hardware than I've got, but then I wondered, "why do I think I have money to buy a new comput… more »

i haven't whined about Vista for awhile ...

... because I haven't used it.  All my computers originally came with one form of MS Windows or another, and I maintain the O/S installs in case I have something I want to run that won't run in Linux.  Or until, as often happens with my older computers,… more »

the sucky state of linux video drivers

I can't complain too much -- all of my computers run linux and all of them work.  But that's not precisely the entire story, is it? In fairness, I could not write a video driver if my life depended on it.  Then, there is the chaos added by the fact tha… more »

dropbox, truecrypt, etc. ... and cloud security issues

Cloud computing has inherent security issues that do not exist when you keep your computer and isolated from attack.  Just keeping some reasonable focus on the issues is a herculean task. With free software, we do not actually know there is no malevol… more »

ok, a tad slower. just a tad.

jolicloud desktop with added conky, compiz, cairo dock, google gadgets
I warned ... me.  I would customize this Jolicloud thing until I slowed it down. And I did.  Of course, this elderly e-Machine is still 100x faster than when I boot into the native, now extremely kludgy WindowsXP. I know where this is going -- next I wi… more »

more jolicloud

You can see I have added a category for "jolicloud" to my blog.  I now have two computers running Jolicloud and everything is going great(er) than expected! When I tried the beta, I did not realize that Jolicloud was sitting on top of a full Ubuntu ins… more »

Well, Snaps!

OK, I'm legally too old to say, "snaps" to anything. But in any event, I wanted Thunderbird to connect to my office Windows Exchange server.  Which it doesn't. Howsomever, I came across DavMail.  As this is sort of a server-connector type thing, it see… more »

imagine my surprise

or not. Though usually I do not expect linux version upgrades to backslide.  Occasionally I must remind myself of my own adage: "When all else fails, try another distro." So my gateway netbook quit working (fan failure that suddenly came back alive??… more »

jolicloud again

Okay, I'm not used to looking at everything on my screen being quite so big.  That's because Jolicloud did not get the resolution on my external monitor right, so I have 1024x768 instead of 1280 x 1024 that I expected to see.OTOH, Jolicloud set everythin… more »

google+verizon be evil

The internet playground that we have known is coming to an end.  We live in times where public interest is repeatedly subordinated to corporate profit motives.  So, whatdyaexpect? It's really the fault of "the public", of course.  So, I guess you would… more »

jolicloud 1.0

Back in March or April, I wrote about my trial run with Jolicloud.  But of course, I use a lot of apps, I'm pretty much an OpenSUSE person, and equipment failures caused me to end the jolicloud experiment. But, as a jolicloud account holder, I recently… more »

advanced arghhhravation.

So... I have an older cheapo external monitor. AOC, I think.  Now when my Sony laptop is connected to it, lxrandr thinks it is a 1280 x 1024 monitor.  The AOC begs to differ.  Not that it doesn't work, mond you, it works fine, other than rendering white… more »

advanced aggravation

Computers, and especially linux, keep getting better and better. That does not eliminate aggravation.  There is always something that could be improved.  New issues that didn't previously exist -- because we had yet to think of them -- emerge.OpSu 11.3… more »

more stuff that just works, er, [fail]

So, I got my daughter a 32 gb iPod Touch for her birthday and inherited her 8 gb one.  She upgraded to iOS 4.0 and now randomly the screen goes completely white.  No fix yet apparently -- lots of people having this bug and no comment from Apple.  Then I… more »

alot less than full disclosure

No more Blackberries for me.  Period. My blackberry web browser quit working.  This caused  me to call Verizon tech support to find out why.  I was told that there was nothing wrong with my connection, so my company IT must have shut it off. WHAT????… more »

progress in the workplace

Soooo...once again I have to mention how HAPPY I am with the Cradlepoint hotspot device.  I thought this relatively minor change would not be a big deal. I go to these hearings where I have to get my netbook online to access my data server really quick… more »
