double arghh! and hockey sticks

I am lost in the land of perpetual beta.  Self-inflicted, since I insist upon perpetually trying stuff out. I am further locked in the trichotomy of hardware/software combinations.  Oh, whatever. Here is what I don't understand.  My two 10 year old 5… more »

majorly issues

Well, my hp zd7000 OpSu 11.2/KDE 4.4 install has gone cuckoo.  Not only does it use considerable cpu at idle, when the power management kicks in and turns OFF the screen, cpu usage skyrockets to 60% and the fans kick on full blast. Life was better with… more »

just another malcontent post

Sometimes I find progress puzzling.  My two newer computers are running just fine with OpenSUSE 11.2 and KDE 4.4.  I think. OTOH, my two 10 year old computers are not faring so well.  As reported somewhat previously, I had to roll back my Toshiba A15 l… more »

software overload

So, since my screen is dark in KDE, I've been getting more familiar with LXDE. It's somewhat perplexing, but working really nicely.  The perplexing part is that it adopts bits and pieces from KDE4, Gnome and Compiz.  I thought initially that it did not… more »

haiku operating system

Wouldn't you know I would go to a Linux computer show, as an exhibitor no less, and come home enamored with a not-linux operating system. Okay, well it's not ready for prime time and who knows when or if it will be.  The exhibitor I talked to said it h… more »

Live blogging -- kde at SCALE

Yes, I am here at SCALE in Los Angeles at the Westin near LAX.  I'm telling people about KDE at the KDE exhibition table. The openSUSE table is right across from me.  Lots of people, mostly already Linux users though. Fun! more »

what is eviler than microsoft or apple?

Microsoft AND Apple, combined, of course. So, my wife and daughter buy a two-pack of iTouches.  This all came about because Palm apparently does not market an actual PDA that is not a phone anymore.  So, my wife's secretary decided that an iTouch wo… more »

Because what I really want to know is, "who is the evil bean counter at Microsoft who decides which windows features should be disabled in windows 7 "starter" so that you if you want an actual normal version of Windows, you have to upgrade? Commercial… more »

need for speed

I recently became aware of the lxde desktop.  The concept is that it is a low overhead desktop, good for old computers and net books.  (Or, making anything else go faster, I suppose). I had some trouble getting it to install on my netbook, though it in… more »

opensuse 11.2 errata

Just a few things happening on my install(s). Running the KDE 4.4 RC3 from the Factory repositories.  For some reason, when my Gateway comes back from hibernate, the connect speeds are awful and I have to reboot.  This is new. I stumbled across LXDE,… more »
