For no apparent reason, my main computer is now seeing into the future (or at least that is what it's clock says). My other computers still have present time.
While that is mildly annoying, the fact that sshfs will not maintain a persistent connections…

My only remaining windows-only machine has been acting weird. I think the motherboard is dying.I don't specifically know what the problem is ...
[later update: my external drive enclosure borked. It took all day to figure this out. I discovered whe…

Where did all my internet speed go?I recently upgraded from 3 meg to 6 meg internet connection. Not that it was a meaningful change, since my downloads average about 350kb/sec or so (such as when I update from OpSu). But, suddenly for the last couple o…

The number one search on my site in recent days has been for solutions to the broken 2.6.27.19 kernel from OpenSUSE 11.1. Which, as far as I know, was fixed. In fact, I am seeing more searches now than at the time I installed the broken kernel and had to…

I am apparently the only person on the planet that likes to have my documents retrievable via a queriable database.I've been tracking my documents in this manner since back in the days when the program paused to tell me which floppy disk to put in the dr…

I seem to have found the threshold number of widgets before plasma becomes unstable on my system and also now I know how to kill and restart plasma.I have six widgts on the desktop and three added icons to the default panel. Seems stable. I added three…

I spent the entire [lost] day rewriting the code for my php/website bookmark database. But hey! What are Sundays for?The results are found here. Which isn't pretty, is it?
I look at the page at the link and I can't make any sense of it. Just these…

So, my kde4/plasma network manager managed to connect my wireless for one and one half days. Then I tried to successfully return from suspend -- no connect, no connect on logout/login no connect on shutdown & reboot -- but I did use up 25% of my batte…

A post on, I think, KDE Planet has suggest that users can post their feature suggestions/requests in the kde community forum. It's unlikely my particular wish list is broadly applicable (meaning it won't happen), but I'll list some things here:
1. Fix…

Although I don't actually use the plasma desktop anymore/yet ... occasionally I like to check in and see how it's doing. Especially when I've downloaded, oh, say 3 gig or so of OpenSUSE updates in the last couple of days.I have given up on putting icons…

You know, desktop widgets that work ...Being a curmudgeon, I was skeptical of kde 4. But, being an early adapter, I couldn't not try it. So, I read all the rationalizations about why KDE 3.5 could not be maintained and why a completely new direction wa…

Suddenly kio-imap4 was sucking up 48% of my cpu. What?KMail had been acting a bit weird. I logged out and logged back in -- didn't solve the problem. I had to reboot the computer.
Dang.
(Just for the record, I was running a Gnome login with IceW…

It turns out my problem with the travelling gnome panels is not entirely "unpredictable."It occurred to me that I had made a panel change coincident to the problem emerging. So I tested it again.
I had decided I wanted panels that did not go the full…

It is now Tuesday, perhaps I shall call it "Try Again Tuesday" or something. But, following Mucked up Monday I could not take it anymore & tried a new direction for desktop stability.
I don't care much about flash -- especially flash that doesn't w…

Well, I finally got some sound recording to work on this computer ...Recording is pretty important to me -- and on my main work computer, for months NOTHING. Oh, I've tried connecting things with the JACK panel and other efforts. Nothing, Nothing, Noth…

Nothing much to report with KDE 4.2.1, which is a good thing I suppose.I seem to be packing more widgets onto the desktop and more widgets onto the panels without plasma losing its mind. The icons in my slim panel have settled down to an appropriate siz…

The new 1.4 of virtualbox, along with the new 2.6.27.19-3.2 linux kernel (new to OpenSUSE that is) have inflicted some printing issues on me. But, there is good news on the pdf front.
For some reason, my virtualbox install is printing very slowly to…

Well, I re-re-installed the new kernel, even though Yast specified the new kernel to still be the same one from 2/27/09 -- and this time, wouldn't you know it, it works. And, plasma's not crashing now.
There may be some relationship to another change…

Every time I declare linux exceptionally cool and ready for prime time, some new and distressing disaster occurs.I'm still running on the "trace" kernel, as OpenSUSE has yet to notice the defective new default kernel and repair it. Or, if they have done…
